Killer Debate

Hey all, Instead of bragging about me and describing what “debating” is I decided to get in to the topic straight away. I got to save your precious time because this article itself is a “long post”. But just to give you a little idea about myself, I am a high-school debater who started as a reserve member and ended up as the leader. No need to waste your time. Let’s get in to the topic.

When you know you are in the debate team, what is the bright side?
  • Sometimes we need not to volunteer because teachers often add us to the debates by force. Think about the bright side.
  • Once you do well in the debate many people recognize you as a person with a good tongue as well as with a good personality. There was one girl in FB who didn’t even speak to me earlier, but after the debate competition which took place in her school she said me “Hi” first.
  • How about a payment? Yes, if you do it well, you may get hired do a speech or to do a presentation. Impress the audience and there could be someone with an offer.
  •  Imagine when you go to a job-interview, It could be the killer fact that impresses the panel if you said you were in the debate team. If you could hold your nerve in a debate in front of a big audience, where else you would possibly fail?

Collecting facts for the debate

  • Once you get the topic, get a paper and draw circles. Stay in your topic and write any point that comes to your mind in those circles.  Write as much as possible, now arrange those points in order.
  • Now start finding facts under each point. Do not by heart those facts. Just keep the order in your mind. If papers are allowed you need not to do it either.

·         Use internet, books, friends, teachers to collect facts.

Getting ready to break opponent points
·         Don’t wait till the debate to see opposing arguments. You might not able to break single point if you didn’t get ready before the debate. We collected facts in our topic earlier. Now collect facts for the opposite topic. Don’t waste your time to find unique points they could come up with. Try to collect common points they probably would bring out. Then it’s up to you to make arguments to break those points.

EX: If it was about a tourist place’s importance, your opponents will surely speak about the economical benefits for the locals. So you should bring in a worthy argument.
Ex: Yes it’s true the place is a vital source of income to the locals, but what about the pollution it probably would do the nature due its tourist attraction?

How to make your speech
  • When you argue with your friends you never struggle. But in a debate you do struggle. Why? Because you try to vomit all the facts you by-heart earlier. That’s not working. When you make a speech you get nervous and that doesn't allow you to speak those by-heart things.
  • So, you should do the same thing what you do when you are arguing with friends at home or at school.  No need to by-heart. Just speak out the facts that come to your mind.
  • But to do it to perfect, go through the list of circles you prepared earlier. Once you speak out everything in your mind on a certain circle go to the other circle.  ( You must practice at home, so the facts will automatically come to your mind at the debate)
  •  Make sure you use your hands, sometimes I make no good point but still due to my hand movements audience and the judges get impressed and I get scored.
  • Avoid eye contacts, You might get distracted if you make eye-contacts with opponents who stare at you. Don’t look straight at the audience either. I usually look at something on the wall so the audience think I look at them although I am not,
  • But make sure you make eye contacts with the judges when you end a certain point. When you end a point by staring at the judge board, the confidence will automatically be transmitted from your face to the judges.

*Do not disturb the opponents while they do their speech.
*Do not say nonsense like “that book has the proofs for this,…”, unless you are very sure the whole bunch of people at the place has read it.
